Why every shared image deserves 60 seconds of preparation
A photo is never just pixels. A file fresh off your phone carries EXIF metadata: the exact GPS coordinates of where it was taken, the second it was captured, your device model, sometimes even a serial number. A screenshot carries whatever was visible on your screen — usernames in corners, email subjects in tabs, order numbers, home addresses in map apps. When you attach the original file to an email, list something on a marketplace, or hit "send original" in a chat app, all of it travels along.
The risks are concrete, not theoretical. A marketplace photo taken at home resolves to a street address. A series of running-app screenshots maps a daily route. A "look at this bug" screenshot leaks a customer email to a public forum. And for creators, the risk points the other way: work posted without a watermark gets reposted without attribution, and proving ownership after the fact is painful.
The fix does not require paranoia — it requires a habit. Before an image leaves your device: check and strip its metadata; redact anything in the frame you would not print on a postcard; watermark it if it is your work being published; then compress or resize it for wherever it is going.
