Are my images uploaded during compression?

No. Compression uses the browser canvas encoder and runs on your device. There is no upload, no queue and no server-side size limit.

How does "target size" mode work?

The tool re-encodes the image several times, binary-searching the quality parameter until it finds the highest quality that stays at or under your KB target. If even the lowest quality cannot reach the target, you get the smallest achievable file.

Why does my PNG barely shrink?

PNG is a lossless format — there is no quality dial to turn. For photos, switch the output format to JPG or WebP and you will typically save 70–90%. Keep PNG only for screenshots with sharp text or images that need transparency.

What quality setting should I use?

0.8 is a good default: visually near-identical for photos with major savings. Below 0.6 compression artifacts start to show in gradients and fine detail. For thumbnails or previews you can go lower.

Is EXIF metadata kept in the compressed file?

No — re-encoding through canvas produces a fresh file without EXIF, GPS location or camera information. If you only want to remove metadata without recompressing, use the EXIF remover tool instead, which is lossless for JPEG.
